Identity - My Social Network Stalker

I watched a documentary recently on Channel 4 called 'True Stories: My Social Network Stalker', which told the story of a girl, Ruth, who was stalked for over three years online. Ruth believed the abusive messages were from former school friends but was then deeply shocked to find out it was in fact her own boyfriend.

We find out in the documentary that Ruths boyfriend Shane Webber had posed as her in chat rooms, and hacked into her Facebook page, trying to alienate her freinds and isolate her from her own life. She stated 'He was the person I trusted throughout the whole thing'.

I found this programme really interesting as it shows just how easy it is for someone to set up these pages online and steal your identity without you having any knowledge. The fact that it turned out to be the girls own boyfriend just makes the story even more frightening!

  1. I think that this is an extreme case, but it takes things like this to get people to wise up to the dangers of sharing information online. It is scary though that someone can ruin somebodys life so easily by stealing others' identity.
